NBR Six-wheel coaches: Kit 9300

NBR(1908) Dia.19; NBR(1921) Dia.20; LNER SSA Dia.18B
6-compartment 3rd (1878-89), 7' 6" width

The prototype

The General Arrangement drawing for this vehicle was 17C dated 27th February 1878, the dimensions following the standard ‘Drummond’ sizes for six wheel stock, with a body width of 7' 6", remaining current until the advent of the 8' 0" wide six compartment vehicles (kit 9301) on the same length of underframe which emerged under drawing 76C of 11th January 1888. These vehicles contained 6 Third class compartments.

On 25th July 1878 the Locomotive & Stores Committee agreed that some 100 vehicles would be built, and it later transpired that 20 would be six compartment thirds. Initially planned to be built by outside contractors, on 13th September 1878 this was changed to Cowlairs.

A number of vehicles of this type were taken into departmental stock on their demise from revenue earning service, and others were grounded as bothies.

Basic dimensions were:

Length over Buffers: 38' 5½"
Length over Body:35' 6½"
Wheelbase:11' 6" x 11' 6"
Roof over Rail:11' 8"
Width over Body:7' 6"
Tare Weight:13 Tons 8½ cwt.
Seating:60 passengers

However, the kits do not include wheels or pin point bearings, couplings, paint or transfers.
